Who are the "heroes" of today? Most people consider famous icons or politicians their heroes and their glory is certainly tarnished. A great political record that wins you wide renown can easy be tarnished when it comes out that you were cheating. Even if someone does not make a mistake so large that it ruins them, how long can glory last? It can only go on so long until people begin to forget an achievement, at which time a persons' glory becomes tarnished from age.","dateCreated":"1329192776","smartDate":"Feb 13, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"WBurnett173","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/WBurnett173","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50471144","body":"I do believe that this phrase has relevance to today, but with varying amounts defending on the form of glory. Dictionary.com defines glory as "something that is a source of honor, fame, or admiration; a distinguished ornament or an object of pride." To a group like Seal Team Six, that is definitely a glorious mission for the American people because one of the most deadly individuals in all the world is vanquished by their hands protecting their home and people in the proccess. That is truly an honorable event that was slightly tarnished by the death of unarmed innocents, but a minor evil for the greater good. Then there are idols in today's society like Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and Britney Spears who are only famous by being so "friendly" in the first place. That is definitly a source of fame, but is there glory really glory since it is no negative to being with? Is their glory tarnished by being glorious. Then there is Whitney Houston who reacently passed away. She had a marvelous voice and great talent while being called a voice of a generation, after her death that is. She also had a pretty sketchy past with drugs causing some of her splendor to vanish. But nobody is mentioning that side of her, only the good. So her glory is being untarnished. Then there is the unknown glory of the every day individual. Keeping calm under pressure, getting accepted to college, and marrying the love of your life are all glorious events in the eyes of the ordinary individuals, but may not be recognized in society. So is that glory being tarnished for not being recognized by a large group or is glory recognized by all a tarnishing affect because manipulation will occur. Like they say in Pippin. "Glory, Glory" as they mutilate the enemy.","dateCreated":"1329194408","smartDate":"Feb 13, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"davidcaggiano","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/davidcaggiano","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50471810","body":"I do believe in present day in the present day that glory is tarnished. Most heroes of today will ultimately do some act of heresy whether big or small and it will be blown out of proportion. These people become big in the public's eyes and then gain fame for all the wrong reasons. Certain people such as Sully who landed the plane on the Hudson river did deserve his fame and he didn't let that ruin what he loves doing. But in most cases this is not true and glory is tarnished. Heroes then were people who saved a nation or conquered a villain who was threatening a whole group of people. Heroes today are celebrities and are completely conveying the wrong message and are not really in a sense heroes. Who would you rather be your hero, Achilles or Justin Bieber?","dateCreated":"1329197124","smartDate":"Feb 13, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"zachneal1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/zachneal1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50477202","body":"I think this does apply to today's society. In most cases now, glory is achieved through nonvaliant means or simply too much pride goes and tarnishes their good deeds. A lot of portrayals in movies or tv series also show these same scenarios. Lucky some of the heroes realize their egotistical ways and become once again the person was revered as.","dateCreated":"1329225636","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"Jackiemachesky","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Jackiemachesky","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50478398","body":"I would agree with this phrase applies to today's society as well as current images of heroes. There are very few who are known for being so pure that their glory remains untarnished, but too often many make mistakes (usually because others are watching for them to make mistakes) and that in turn causes their reputation to fall short. One of the reasons why this quote applies to today's society is because no one is recognized as being perfect, and so many glorify individuals that can hold up to standards but because there is so much pressure to remain perfect (in an imperfect world), there is yet to be a modern day hero. Actually, this also depends on how you would define a hero. We all have different images of who or what we think is a hero, so this is subjective and kind of dependent upon the individual. To be honest, my idea of a hero isn't someone who is perfect. It's someone who isn't perfect and recognizes that, because humbleness is an admirable trait (in my opinion) to have. So who do we consider our heroes? Superstars, models, or actors? Or perhaps more along the lines of a common person (who acts maturely and responsibly even if there aren't cameras around)? Food for thought.","dateCreated":"1329227133","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jenniferlacount","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jenniferlacount","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50479554","body":"This does apply to today. Modern day heroes achieve glory but are quickly forgotten and shifted out of relevance. Glory is often tarnished by death and the way that glory is achieved. For example seal team six achieved gloy but they had to do it through an act of violence which is the warior's way. Also the time that passes after a hero dies erodes their memory as the wind and sand would a rock.","dateCreated":"1329228316","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"caseygallagher1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/caseygallagher1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50480110","body":"I think that in today's world, the state "glory" often depends on how it is achieved and the perspective of the observers. If glory is achieved through underhanded actions and involves harming others to get to the top, said glory is obviously tarnished because it was achieved dishonorably and will likely be short-lived. Such examples include the reigns of history's dictators who were forceabley glorified but generally hated. However, if glory is achieved for worthy deeds or great accomplishments, then that person is rightfully glorified as one who worked immensely hard to reach their achievements against great odds. Such individuals are usually rightfully glorified and remembered in spite of any scandals that might have tarnished their reputation in the past, meaning that the overall glory of their accomplishments was not tarnished.","dateCreated":"1329229106","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"caseygallagher1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/caseygallagher1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50482592","body":""All Glory is Tarnished" is easily applicable to life today. Most people consider the 'heroes' of today to be celebrities\/politicians\/firefighters etc. People seem to only remember the negative spotlight as opposed to the good things. A good example of this would be Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno. With 409 wins, 29 bowl appearances, and 21 wins all while turning down NFL coaching offers, he was convicted of child abuse; ailing victimizing. Over time, glory does begin to fade; depending on the impact the legacy has on society.","dateCreated":"1329232017","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"AlexL6thBell","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/AlexL6thBell","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50484508","body":"I do not think that ALL glory is tarnished. I do believe that most glory is tarnished, but not 100% of it is. I agree with my classmates in the sense that a lot of people receive glory in unjust ways, such as fake talent that comes with praise. I also agree that most glory is only remembered until the next big thing comes along. However, there are some people who received glory a long time ago, and are still remembered as freshly today as they were then. For example, Ford, the creator of the Model T and assembly line was praised during his time for such revolutionary ideas. Is he still remembered as important today? Of course he is. Society still uses his ideas everywhere. So I do think that this idea that glory is tarnished is true, but not ALL glory. There are still good people out there who receive glory in an admirable way, and it will stay that way as long as people are in existence.","dateCreated":"1329233709","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"Lindseygsullivan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Lindseygsullivan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50491492","body":"This theme is theme is present today as much as it was in the days of the Anglo-Saxons. While some situations glory is less likely to be "tarnished," such as in an instance when one must be saved in an emergency, many other situations of glory are tarnished once more information is learned about the one being glorified. Glory can be tarnished by death, corruption, or even forgetting the hero that the glory was thrust upon. But some glory lives on for centuries. Think about Beowulf, he lived thousands of years ago and his glory still stands.","dateCreated":"1329250047","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"Meganpeters1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Meganpeters1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"50513944","body":"There is much relevance in the statement "All glory is tarnished" when looking at today's society. Although there are some people who do great things, such as Captain Sullenberger of US Airways flight 1549 who heroically landed the plane in the Hudson River after a bird took out the engines, preventing injury and death, who are worthy of the admiration, but most of the glorified people in today's society are those glorified by the media. Many actors, actresses and performers nowadays are heralded for their talent, while scandals with drugs become apparent. Politics has the same problem as well with promiscuous senators and governors who are unfaithful to their wives. Theirs is a facade of glory that is tarnished underneath with scandalous and base behavior. Even fighting for one's country is sullied by the fact that one must kill others. What glory is there in killing those with different opinions? The tarnish of glory is apparent today.","dateCreated":"1329268272","smartDate":"Feb 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"m.morris.yeah","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/m.morris.yeah","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":18}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
